WASHINGTON — President Bush, moving toward a constitutional showdown with Congress, asserted executive privilege Thursday and rejected lawmakers’ demands for documents that could shed light on the firings of federal prosecutors.

Mr. Bush’s attorney told Congress the White House would not turn over subpoenaed documents for former presidential counsel Harriet Miers and former political director Sara Taylor.

In reaction, Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy accused the administration of shifting “into Nixonian stonewalling” and revealing “disdain for our system of checks and balances.”

  1. The congress is once again trying to slow down progess and in the process is helping the terroists. It is TIME for a change across the board. I will not vote for a single incumbent in the next election.

  2. I’ve always been basically Republican at heart. However, this is starting to embarrass me as much as Newt did during the Reagan years. At least Reagan had an excuse – he was early Alzheimer’s. If Bush has nothing to hide and everything was above board in the US Attorneys’ firings, why would invoke Executive Privilege? He’s hiding something shady. The entire thing stinks.

  3. And in contrast to Jay – it has nothing to do with terrorism. It has to do with Mr. Bush thinking because he’s President, he’s above the law. Or he IS the law. Poor Mr. Bush has developed King syndrome. He thinks whatever he does is right and damn public opinion. Thank God his immigration bill was defeated. Even as a Republican, I’ll be glad to see Bush’s term over…..

  4. And, the story goes on. The White House is still shrouded in secrecy. They think that what we don’t know, won’t hurt us.
Why were these attorneys fired ?????????????? The American people want to know. Give us an answer scumbag politicians !!!!!!!
